About

Who am I?
My name is Jaquetta, I am here to listen and support you through whatever it is that has brought you here. I have a science degree in Reflective Therapeutic Practice from Middlesex University and am a registered accredited member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) with 12+ years’ experience practising face-to-face.

Now, prompted by the Coronavirus pandemic changing all our lives in so many ways, I’ve upgraded my skills to offer counselling therapy online.

At the core of my practice are the philosophical approaches to counselling of Person-Centred therapy, Existentialism and Gestalt. This means that I use an integrated approach to best match your individual needs, one that does not preach or direct, respecting you for your unique way of Being. I believe that everyone has an innate ability, to find their way through most of life's ups and downs, yet sometimes we can be rocked by significant life events, lose direction, confidence and self esteem or simply feel lost, depressed and overwhelmed, wondering just how we have landed ourselves here in this state! I see my job as offering different perspectives, to help you find the clearer, calmer waters to a greater understanding and acceptance of yourself, your innermost thoughts and feelings, so you can then make the changes you choose to make, resolve your difficulties and find a new way forward in your life. Now that does not necessarily mean big changes, such as separation, divorce or job change, but simply a shift in awareness and attitude that sets you fair for a more positive and happier experience of life. And sometimes, that can happen in just one session!

My specialties include such issues as:
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Affects in adulthood of childhood trauma or abuse
  • Low self esteem
  • relationship issues either at home or at work

Counselling
Often called talking therapy, it could just as easily be called listening therapy. As we talk together counselling gives you the time and head-space to give a voice to your innermost thoughts and feelings to explore areas of your life that are causing you difficulties, confusion or emotional pain. You can express yourself in confidence, without fear of being adversely criticised or judged, and where you can share your concerns without feeling you are burdening friends and/or family.

* On the front page I have very much paraphrased Marcel Proust:
The only true voyage of discovery, the only fountain of Eternal Youth, would be not to visit strange lands but to possess other eyes, to behold the universe through the eyes of another, of a hundred others, to behold the hundred universes that each of them beholds, that each of them is. Marcel Proust. Remembrance of Things Past (or In Search of Lost Time). Volume 5, The Prisoner.

In this passage Proust was referring to artistic expression through music and painting, yet I believe it could also apply to the work we do in therapy, looking with “other eyes” at our experience of life our world view and relationship with it.

As a member of BACP, I abide by their Ethical Framework and Guidelines for Good Practice, accessible to view at https://www.bacp.co.uk/events-and-resources/ethics-and-standards/ethical-framework-for-the-counselling-professions/

POEM

HOHUSAI SAYS by Roger Keyes
Hokusai says look carefully.
He says pay attention, notice.
He says keep looking, stay curious.
He says there is no end to seeing
He says look forward to getting old.
He says keep changing,
you just get more who you really are.
He says get stuck, accept it, repeat
yourself as long as it is interesting.
He says keep doing what you love.
He says keep praying.
He says every one of us is a child,
every one of us is ancient
every one of us has a body.
He says every one of us is frightened.
He says every one of us has to find
a way to live with fear.
He says everything is alive —
shells, buildings, people, fish,
mountains, trees, wood is alive.
Water is alive.
Everything has its own life.
Everything lives inside us.
He says live with the world inside you.
He says it doesn’t matter if you draw,
or write books. It doesn’t matter
if you saw wood, or catch fish.
It doesn’t matter if you sit at home
and stare at the ants on your veranda
or the shadows of the trees
and grasses in your garden.
It matters that you care.
It matters that you feel.
It matters that you notice.
It matters that life lives through you.
Contentment is life living through you.
Joy is life living through you.
Satisfaction and strength
is life living through you.
He says don’t be afraid.
Don’t be afraid.
Love, feel, let life take you by the hand.
Let life live through you.
